Find a way to volunteer this holiday season with AI
Tell AI what you enjoy, how much time you have and how you get around. It suggests kinds of volunteering to look for and helps you write the first email.
Lots of people want to give their time around Thanksgiving and the holidays but don't know where to start. Some places are flooded with offers that week and short of help in January. AI can help you think about what fits you, what to search for, and what to say when you reach out.
Step 1: Find what fits you
Example: "I'm 68, retired from teaching, and I can give about 4 hours a week. I don't drive at night and I can't lift heavy boxes. Suggest 8 kinds of volunteering that might suit me, and what to search for to find each one near Columbus, Ohio."
Common ideas are food banks and pantries, meal delivery to older neighbors, reading or tutoring programs, library help, animal shelters, hospital greeters, places of worship, and calling or writing to people who live alone. Many can be done from home.
Step 2: Check it, then reach out
AI doesn't know which local groups are taking helpers right now, so use its list as a starting point. Search the group's name, look at their own website, or call. Then ask AI to write a short note: "Write a friendly 4-sentence email to a food pantry's volunteer coordinator. I can help Tuesday mornings, I'm new to this, and I'd like to know what training they need."
Step 3: Make a plan you can keep
Example: "Make a simple monthly plan for my volunteering: food pantry on Tuesday mornings and writing 2 cards a week to residents at a care home. Leave Sundays free."
Ask about January too. Help is often most needed after the holidays, when the offers slow down.
Things to know
- Some groups ask for a background check or a short training, especially to work with children or older adults. That's normal.
- A real volunteer group won't ask you for money, gift cards, or your bank details to sign up. If one does, stop. Our guide to checking a charity before you give explains the warning signs.
- Clearing out the house this season? Our decluttering guide covers what to donate and where. Our printable cheat sheet has more prompts to try.
