Fix a tech problem with AI, step by step

Checked Oct 24, 2026. These apps change often.

Tell the AI what device you have, what you were doing, and what you see on the screen. Then ask it to give you one step at a time.

The printer says it's offline. The TV has no sound. The phone won't connect to Wi-Fi. You don't always need to wait for a grandchild or call a help line. AI chat apps are good at walking you through common fixes, as long as you tell them enough about the problem.

Give it the details

The more the AI knows, the better its steps. Include:

Example: "My HP printer says 'offline' when I try to print from my Windows laptop. It printed fine last week. I already turned the printer off and on. Walk me through fixing it one step at a time, and wait for me to say 'done' before the next step."

Ask for one step at a time

Long lists are hard to follow while you're bent over a router. Ask for "one step at a time" and "wait for me before the next step". If a step doesn't make sense, say so: "I don't see a Settings button. Where else could it be?"

Show it a picture

Most AI apps let you add a photo with the camera or plus (+) button. A photo of the error message or the blinking lights often explains more than words can. Ask: "What do these lights mean?"

Questions

Can ChatGPT fix my computer?

It can't touch your computer, but it can walk you through the fixes step by step while you do them. Describe the problem and ask for one step at a time.

What should I tell AI about a tech problem?

The device and model, what you were doing, the exact error message, and what you already tried. A photo of the screen helps too.

Is it safe to follow AI's tech advice?

For everyday fixes like restarting or checking settings, yes. Stop if it ever suggests anything involving payments, remote access or opening a device.

Is this free?

Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
