Use AI to help with your job search
You bring the experience, AI helps you say it clearly. It's a patient practice partner for resumes, cover letters, and interviews.
Job hunting is hard enough without staring at a blank resume. Whether it's your first job, a career change, or getting back to work after years away, an AI chat can help you find the words for what you already know how to do.
Turn your duties into resume lines
Write down what you did at each job in everyday words, then ask: "Turn these into four short resume bullet points that start with an action word and show results where I can." Add numbers if you have them, like how many customers or how much money.
Example: "I worked the front desk at a dentist office for 6 years. I answered phones, booked about 40 appointments a day, handled insurance questions, and trained two new hires. Write 4 resume bullet points for an office manager job."
A short cover letter for each job
Paste the job posting (leave out any personal info) and a few lines about you, and ask for a cover letter under 200 words that matches what they're asking for. Short and specific beats long and fancy.
Practice the interview
Ask it to act as the interviewer: "Ask me 5 common questions for a retail manager job, one at a time, and give me feedback on each answer." Practicing out loud, even with a chat, makes the real one less scary.
Say thank you after
Ask for a three-sentence thank-you note that mentions one thing you talked about in the interview. Send it the same day.
Things to know
- Never make up experience. AI will happily write things that aren't true, and that can cost you the job.
- Read every line out loud. If it doesn't sound like you, ask it to make it plainer.
- Leave your address, phone number, and Social Security number out of the chat. Add contact details yourself at the end.
Questions
Will employers know I used AI?
Not if you use your own real details and edit the draft. Generic, fancy wording is what gives it away.
Can it help if I've been out of work for years?
Yes. Tell it what you did in that time (caregiving, volunteering, running a household) and ask how to describe it honestly.
Should I use the same resume for every job?
Better not. Ask AI to adjust your bullets for each job posting. It takes a minute.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do all of this, and our coach is free to try.
