How to use AI to check if a message is a scam
AI can help you spot warning signs in a text or email. Here's how to ask safely, and what to do with the answer.
A text says your package is stuck. An email says your account is locked. A message "from the bank" wants you to act now. It's hard to know what's real. An AI chat can be a calm second opinion, as long as you use it the right way.
Step 1: Don't click anything yet
Don't tap links, call numbers in the message, or reply. Just copy the words of the message.
Step 2: Take out anything private
Before you paste, delete or replace your name, account numbers, addresses, and any codes. Write [MY NAME] or [NUMBER] instead. The AI doesn't need them to spot a scam.
Step 3: Ask the AI
Copy this and paste the message where it says:
I got this message and I'm not sure if it's real. Please list any warning signs of a scam you see, explain each one in plain words, and tell me the safest way to check if it's real. Here is the message: [PASTE MESSAGE]
Common warning signs
- It rushes you: "act now," "within 24 hours," "your account will be closed."
- It asks for money, gift cards, codes, or passwords.
- The sender's address or number doesn't match the real company.
- Spelling or wording feels a little off.
- It's a prize, refund, or problem you weren't expecting.
Step 4: Check it yourself
AI can point out warning signs, but it can't know for sure. To check, contact the company using a phone number or website you already trust, like the number on your card or a bill, not the one in the message. When in doubt, it's okay to ignore it.

Questions
Can AI tell me for certain if something is a scam?
No. It can spot warning signs and suggest what to ask. Always confirm with the company directly.
Is it safe to paste the message into an AI?
Yes, once you've removed your private details. Never paste passwords, codes, or account numbers.
I already clicked the link. What now?
Don't enter any information. If you typed a password, change it from the real website or app, and call your bank using the number on your card if money or card details were involved.
