Use AI to understand your bills and pay less

AI can't call your provider for you, but it can help you understand the bill, compare your options, and know exactly what to say when you call.

Monthly bills have a way of creeping up. A promo ends, a fee appears, and suddenly the phone or internet costs more than it did last year. An AI chat is a patient helper for the boring parts: reading the fine print, lining up plans side by side, and writing down what to ask.

Start with the bill you have

Copy the charges from your bill (leave out your account number and address) and ask: "Explain each line of this bill in plain words. Which charges are fees, and which ones might I be able to remove?"

Compare plans side by side

Tell it how you actually use the service: how many people, how much data or TV, and what you pay now. Paste the details of two or three plans from the providers' websites and ask for a simple table with the total monthly cost after any promo ends.

Example: "Compare these three phone plans for two people who use about 5 GB of data a month each and mostly call family. Show the monthly total for each, including taxes and fees if listed, and what happens to the price after 12 months."

Know what to say when you call

Ask it to write a short, polite script for calling your provider: what you pay now, the better offer you found, and a clear question like "Can you match this price or move me to a cheaper plan?" Having it written down makes the call much easier.

For small businesses too

The same steps work for business phone lines, internet, and software subscriptions. Paste your list of monthly services and ask which ones overlap or look unused.

Things to know

Questions

Can AI find me the cheapest plan?

It can compare plans you give it and point out hidden costs, but it doesn't have live prices. Use it to organize your choices, then confirm with the provider.

Is it safe to paste my bill?

Yes, if you remove your name, address, account number, and anything else private first. The charges alone are enough.

Will asking for a lower price really work?

Sometimes. Providers often have offers for customers who ask, especially if you mention a competitor's price. A clear, polite script helps.

Is this free?

Yes. The free versions of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude can do everything in this guide.
