Compare Medicare Advantage and Medigap, with help from AI

4 min readHealth

AI won't pick a plan for you, but it can lay the choices side by side in plain words and help you ask the right questions.

Every fall, people on Medicare get to look at their coverage again. Medicare open enrollment runs from Oct 15 to Dec 7. The big choice is between two paths: Medicare Advantage, or Original Medicare with a Medigap policy and a Part D drug plan. The words alone can make your head spin. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can explain them in plain words and help you get ready to compare real plans.

Step 1: Get the words straight

Example: "Explain in plain words, like I'm new to this: Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medigap and Part D. For each one, tell me in two sentences what it covers and how it works with the others."

Ask it to make a short glossary you can print, with words like premium, deductible, copay and network.

Step 2: Tell AI what matters to you

AI can't see your plan or your health, so you tell it what matters.

Example: "I'm 71. I see a heart doctor twice a year, take 4 prescriptions, and spend winters in another state. Make a side-by-side table of what to check under Medicare Advantage vs Original Medicare with Medigap and Part D: doctors, travel, drugs and yearly costs. Don't guess prices. Just tell me what to look up."

Don't type your Medicare number, Social Security number or date of birth into an AI chat. You don't need them for this.

Step 3: Check your drugs and doctors

Make a list of your medicines with the dose, and your doctors' names.

Example: "Turn this list into a checklist I can use with the Medicare Plan Finder: for each plan, does it cover each drug, and are my doctors in its network?"

Then look the plans up yourself on Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048).

Step 4: Questions for a free counselor

Every state has a free, unbiased Medicare counseling program called SHIP (State Health Insurance Assistance Program). Find yours at shiphelp.org or call 1-877-839-2675.

Example: "Write 8 short questions I can ask a SHIP counselor about switching between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare, including what happens if I want to switch back later."

Bring your checklist from Step 3. The counselor can look at real plans in your area with you.

Questions

Can AI tell me which Medicare plan to pick?

No. It can explain the choices and help you make a checklist and questions, but plans, prices and rules change every year. Check them on Medicare.gov or with a free SHIP counselor.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Medicare Advantage is an all-in-one plan from a Medicare-approved private company. It's an alternative to Original Medicare: you still have Medicare and still pay your Part B premium. Medigap is extra insurance that works alongside Original Medicare, usually with a separate Part D drug plan. You can't have both at once.

When can I change my Medicare plan?

During Medicare Open Enrollment, from Oct 15 to Dec 7 each year, you can switch between Medicare Advantage and Original Medicare or change drug plans, with changes starting Jan 1. Medigap works differently: this window doesn't guarantee you can buy a Medigap policy, so check before you switch. There are other windows too; ask a SHIP counselor about yours.
