Get ready for trick-or-treaters with AI

How much candy to buy, treats for kids with food allergies, a safe and well-lit porch, and a friendly sign for the door.
Halloween is on a Saturday this year (October 31, 2026), so more kids may be out, and out earlier. If you're staying home to hand out treats, an AI chat can help you plan the candy, the porch and the evening, so you can enjoy the costumes instead of worrying.
Step 1: How much candy to buy
Tell AI what you know about your street.
Example: "Last year about 40 kids came to my door between 5:30 and 8pm. Halloween is on a Saturday this year. How much candy should I buy if I give 2 pieces each? Give me a number of bags and a backup plan if I run out."
If you don't know, ask it for a range for a busy street and a quiet one. You can also ask it to compare a few big bags you're looking at by how many pieces you get.
Step 2: Treats for kids with allergies
Some kids can't eat nuts, milk or other common treats. Ask AI for non-food ideas, like stickers, glow sticks, pencils or small toys.
Example: "Suggest 8 non-food Halloween treats under a small budget that are safe for young kids, and how to keep them in a separate bowl."
Some families look for a teal pumpkin on the porch, which means you have non-food treats. Read every candy label yourself. AI can miss an ingredient.
Step 3: A safe, welcoming porch
Example: "Make a short checklist to get my front porch ready for trick-or-treaters: lighting, steps, decorations, and my dog. I use a cane, so I want to hand out candy sitting down."
Common items are a bright porch light, clear steps with nothing to trip on, electric candles instead of real flames near costumes, and pets kept in another room. A chair by the door saves a lot of getting up.
Step 4: A sign for the door
Ask AI to write a short, friendly sign.
Example: "Write 3 short signs for my front door: 'Please take 2', 'Back in 10 minutes', and 'Sorry, all out of candy, Happy Halloween!' Large, cheerful words."
Many AI apps can make a picture for the sign too.
Rather not answer the door this year? That's fine. Turn off the porch light, which most families read as "no candy here", and ask AI for a kind sign that says so.
