Use AI to help a grandchild with homework
The math has changed since you were in school. AI can help you catch up in a minute, so you can coach your grandchild without giving them the answers.
When the grandkids come for Thanksgiving or winter break, the homework often comes too. Then you look at the page and realize fractions, or long division, are taught a new way now. An AI chat can be your quiet helper: it can explain the topic to you first, so you can help them think it through. The goal is that they learn it, not that the page gets done.
Ask AI to teach you first
Before you sit down together, type in the question or a short description of the assignment and ask AI to explain it to you as an adult who learned it a long time ago.
Example: "My granddaughter is in 4th grade and has homework on dividing with remainders. Explain how kids usually learn this now, in plain words, so I can help her. Don't give me the answers to her problems. Give me two practice problems that are similar, with the steps."
Ask questions, don't give answers
Ask AI for a few good questions to ask your grandchild, like "What is the problem asking?" or "What did you try first?" Then let them do the thinking. If they're stuck, use a practice problem, not their real one.
Make practice fun
Ask AI for a quick quiz, flashcards, or a silly word problem using their favorite things, like dogs or soccer. A few minutes of play can stick better than an hour of drills.
Things to know
- Follow the teacher's rules. Some classes don't allow AI at all. When in doubt, ask, or have your grandchild write a short note to the teacher.
- AI can be wrong, even on math. Check the steps with your grandchild and with their book or notes.
- Leave out the child's full name, school, and other personal details. You don't need them to get help.
- For older kids, share our guide to studying with AI without cheating. Want to brush up for yourself? See our guide to learning a new skill with AI.

Questions
Is it cheating to use AI to help with homework?
It depends on how you use it and the teacher's rules. Using AI to explain a topic or make practice questions is helping. Having it write the answers is cheating.
What if the math is taught differently now?
Ask AI to explain how the topic is usually taught today, in plain words, and to show the steps on a practice problem. Then check with the child's book or notes.
What should I say instead of giving the answer?
Ask what the problem is asking, what they tried, and what the next small step might be. AI can suggest more questions like these.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
