How to use ChatGPT for the first time

You don't need to be good with computers. If you can send a text message, you can use an AI chat.

ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude are AI chat tools. You type a question or a request in ordinary words, and it types back an answer. It feels a lot like texting a very well-read helper who never gets tired of questions.

Step 1: Open it

On a computer, go to chatgpt.com (or gemini.google.com). On a phone, you can use the same websites or install the free app from your app store. You can try it without paying. Some tools ask you to make a free account first, which takes a minute with an email address.

Step 2: Type something simple

Find the box at the bottom that says something like "Ask anything." Type a question the way you'd say it out loud, then press Enter or tap the arrow. A good first one: "Explain what you can help me with, in simple words."

Step 3: Keep the conversation going

The best part is that you can reply. If the answer is too long, type "Shorter, please." If a word is confusing, type "What does that word mean?" It remembers what you said earlier in the same chat.

Five easy things to try first

  1. Ask for a dinner idea using what's in your fridge.
  2. Paste in a confusing letter (with private numbers removed) and ask what it means.
  3. Ask it to help write a short note to a grandchild or friend.
  4. Ask it to explain something in the news like you're new to the topic.
  5. Ask it to make a simple list for an errand day or a trip.
