Pay less for your prescriptions, with help from AI

3 min readHealth

You don't need to be an expert. You just need the right questions for your pharmacist and your plan.

Medicine prices can be confusing, and the same pill can cost very different amounts depending on the pharmacy, the plan and the size of the refill. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can't see your prices, but it can help you get organized and ask the questions that often lead to savings. It takes about fifteen minutes.

Step 1: Make a simple medicine list

Write down each medicine, the strength, how often you take it and who prescribed it. Then ask AI to tidy it up.

Example: "Turn this into a neat table I can print: medicine, strength, how often, prescribing doctor, pharmacy. Leave a blank column called 'What I pay'. Here's my list: ..."

Fill in what you paid last time from your receipts or pharmacy app.

Step 2: Get plain questions for your pharmacist

Pharmacists know a lot about saving money and are happy to help. AI can help you ask clearly.

Example: "I take these 4 medicines. Write 8 short, polite questions to ask my pharmacist about paying less, like whether a generic is available, whether a 90-day supply costs less, and whether the cash price is lower than my insurance price. Plain words, one line each."

Step 3: Check your plan's drug list during open enrollment

Every drug plan has a list of covered medicines, sometimes called a formulary. If you're on Medicare, open enrollment runs every fall from Oct 15 to Dec 7, and that's the time to check.

Example: "Explain in plain words what a formulary, a tier, a copay and a deductible mean for my prescriptions. Then give me a checklist for comparing next year's drug plans using my medicine list. Don't guess prices. Just tell me what to look up."

Use the plan finder on Medicare.gov, call your plan, or ask a free SHIP counselor to check the real numbers.

Step 4: Ask your doctor the right way

Example: "Help me write a short, polite note to my doctor asking if there's a lower-cost option for one of my medicines that works the same way for me. I don't want to change anything without their OK."

Questions

Can AI tell me the cheapest pharmacy?

No. It can't see real prices. It can help you make a list and the questions to ask, so you can compare prices with your pharmacy, plan or plan finder.

What should I ask my pharmacist to save money?

Ask whether a generic is available, whether a 90-day supply costs less, and whether the cash price is lower than your insurance price. AI can turn these into a short list for your medicines.

Is it safe to put my medicines into an AI chat?

You can leave out your name, birthday and insurance ID. A list of medicine names and strengths is enough for AI to help you get organized.
