Lower your winter heating bill, with help from AI
3 min readHome
Heating bills climb when it gets cold. AI can help you read your bill, find simple savings and ask the right questions.
When the weather turns cold, the heating bill is often the biggest one of the month. You don't need to be an expert to bring it down. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can explain your bill in plain words, suggest easy changes around the house and help you ask your utility company for help.
Step 1: Understand your bill
Type out the lines from your bill, or describe them. Leave out your account number.
Example: "Here are the lines on my gas bill: [paste the line names and amounts]. Explain each one in plain words, tell me which parts change with how much heat I use, and which parts stay the same every month."
Now you know which part you can actually change.
Step 2: Find easy changes around the house
Example: "I live in a two-bedroom house with a gas furnace and I'm home most of the day. Give me 10 simple, low-cost ways to stay warm and use less heat this winter, easiest first. No big projects."
Ask it to turn your favorites into a one-page checklist you can stick on the fridge.
Step 3: Ask your utility what help it offers
Many utility companies offer things like spreading payments evenly across the year, free home energy checks or help for people on a fixed income. What's offered depends on where you live.
Example: "Write me a short list of polite questions to ask my gas company on the phone about payment plans, budget billing, home energy checks and any help for seniors on a fixed income."
AI doesn't know what your company offers. Call or check its website, then ask AI to help you compare the choices.
Step 4: Keep an eye on it each month
Example: "Make me a simple table to track my heating bill each month this winter: month, amount, and one note on the weather, so I can see if my changes are working."
Things to know
- Safety first. Never use an oven or a grill to heat your home, and keep space heaters away from curtains and bedding. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside.
- If you're worried about paying, call your utility before the bill is due. It's easier to set up a plan early.
- Never paste your account number, full address or card details into an AI chat. The bill's line names and amounts are enough.
