Use AI to make a holiday budget
AI won't tell you what you can afford, but it can turn your own numbers into a clear, simple plan for gifts, food, and travel in a few minutes.
The holidays sneak up on your wallet. A gift here, an extra grocery trip there, a plane ticket, and suddenly January feels heavy. An AI chat is good at the boring part: adding things up, splitting one total into pieces, and keeping a list you can check as you go.
Start with one total
Decide how much you want to spend on the whole season, then tell AI the big buckets: gifts, food and hosting, travel, and extras like decorations, cards, and tips. Ask it to split your total into a simple table.
Example: "I want to spend $900 total this holiday season. I'm buying gifts for 8 people, hosting Thanksgiving for 10, and driving 4 hours to see my daughter at Christmas. Split this into a simple budget table with gifts, food, travel, and extras, and leave a little room for surprises."
Gifts without going over
Give it your gift amount and the people on your list, and ask for a per-person amount. If the total is too high, ask: "Where could I cut $100 without anyone feeling left out?" Our gift guide has ideas that fit any budget.
Food and hosting
Tell it how many people, how many meals, and what you usually make. Ask for a menu that fits your food budget and a shopping list grouped by store section. If family is chipping in, ask it to split the costs fairly.
Travel and the little extras
Gas, parking, pet sitting, a hotel night, and wrapping paper add up. Ask AI to list the small costs people often forget for your kind of trip, then add the ones that fit you.
Check in every week
Once a week, tell it what you've spent so far and ask: "Am I on track? What's left in each bucket?" A two-minute check beats a surprise in January.
Things to know
- AI can add wrong. Double-check the math with a calculator before you count on it.
- AI doesn't know today's prices in your area. Use your own numbers, not its guesses.
- Never paste bank account numbers, card numbers, or your Social Security number. Round numbers and categories are all it needs.

Questions
Do I have to share my bank details?
No, and you shouldn't. Just give it round numbers, like "about $300 for gifts." It doesn't need any account information.
Can it tell me how much I should spend?
It can help you think it through, but only you know your bills and savings. Pick the total first, then let AI help you split it.
What if I already went over?
Tell it where you are and ask for a plan to finish the season with what's left. It can suggest simpler gifts, potluck meals, or things to skip.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach is free to try.
