Use AI to find holiday gift ideas

AI is great at the hardest part of gift shopping: getting unstuck. Give it a few details about the person and a budget, and you'll have a list in a minute.

Most of us know the person well. What we lack is ideas. An AI chat can't see your loved one, but if you tell it what they enjoy, what they already have, and what you want to spend, it can suggest gifts you wouldn't have thought of, and explain why each one fits.

The recipe for a good gift list

Tell it four things: who the gift is for, what they love, your budget, and anything to avoid. Then ask for a short list with a one-line reason for each.

Example: "Suggest 8 holiday gifts for my 74-year-old dad. He loves birdwatching and old westerns, already has binoculars, and doesn't want more clutter. Budget is $40. Give a one-line reason for each."

When you have a lot of people to shop for

List everyone in one message with a few words each ("sister, 40s, runner; nephew, 9, loves dinosaurs") and one total budget. Ask it to split the budget and suggest one or two ideas per person in a simple table you can take to the store.

Gifts that aren't things

Ask for experience gifts or homemade ideas: a planned day out, a recipe book of family favorites, a photo calendar, or a "coupon book" of help around the house. These are often the gifts people remember.

Don't forget the card

Once you've picked the gift, ask for a short, warm card message that mentions it. You can also ask for a simple picture idea for a homemade card.

Questions

Can AI pick a gift for someone it doesn't know?

Yes, if you tell it a few things about them. The more specific you are about what they love and already own, the better the ideas.

Will it find the best price?

No. AI chats don't track live prices. Use it for ideas, then shop around.

Is this free?

Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach is free to try.

What if I don't like the ideas?

Tell it why ("too expensive," "he has that") and ask for more. It gets better with each reply.
