Use AI to prepare for a hard conversation
AI can't have the talk for you, but it can help you figure out what you want to say, practice it out loud, and plan for how the other person might react.
Some talks are hard to start: telling family you won't host this year, asking a friend to pay back a loan, or raising a problem with a landlord or a boss. Planning ahead helps you stay calm and say what you mean. An AI chat is a patient practice partner that never gets tired of "one more try."
Write down what you want
Before anything else, tell AI three things: what you want the other person to understand, what you're willing to offer, and what you need from them. That keeps the talk focused on a fix instead of blame.
Example: "Help me prepare to tell my brother I can't host Thanksgiving this year. I want him to know it's about my health, not him. I can bring two dishes. I need him or someone else to host. Give me an opening line and 4 short talking points, kind but clear."
Get a few calm opening lines
The first sentence is often the hardest. Ask AI for three ways to start, from gentle to more direct, and pick the one that sounds like you.
Practice the hard parts
Ask AI to play the other person and respond the way they might, including pushback. Practice your answers. Then ask it for phrases to avoid, the ones that tend to make people defensive.
Decide what happens next
Ask AI to help you plan a simple ending: what you'll agree on, what you'll do if the talk goes badly, and when you might try again. A plan for "next" makes it easier to start.
Things to know
- Keep private details about other people out of it. First names or "my brother" are enough.
- AI isn't a counselor, lawyer, or doctor. For legal, medical, or safety problems, talk to a real professional. If you feel unsafe, contact local emergency services.
- Use AI's words as a starting point, then say it your own way.
- Getting ready for the holidays? See our Thanksgiving planning guide. If the hard talk is about a loss, see our guide to writing a sympathy note.

Questions
Can AI really help with a personal talk?
Yes, as a practice partner. It helps you sort out what you want to say and try it out loud. The real talk, and the feelings, are yours.
Should I read AI's words out loud as-is?
Better not. Use its talking points as notes and say them the way you normally talk.
What if the other person reacts badly?
Practice that part with AI ahead of time, and plan a calm way to pause the talk and come back to it later.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
