Read small print with your phone camera and AI

Checked Oct 24, 2026. These apps change often.

Take a photo, add it to an AI chat, and ask it to read the words back to you in plain language. It's handy for pill bottles, menus, forms and appliance labels.

Tiny print is everywhere: medicine labels, restaurant menus, warranty cards, the back of a thermostat. AI chat apps like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot can look at a photo you take and tell you what it says. You can then ask follow-up questions, just like asking a friend who's looking over your shoulder.

How to do it

  1. Open your AI app and start a new chat.
  2. Look for a camera button or a plus (+) button next to where you type. Tap it and choose to take a photo, or pick one you already took.
  3. Hold the phone steady, in good light, with the words filling most of the screen.
  4. Type or say what you want, for example: "Read this label to me in large, simple words."
  5. Ask follow-up questions, like "What does 'take with food' mean here?"

On free accounts, photo uploads can have a daily limit. If you hit it, the app tells you when it resets.

Things to ask

Example: "This is the label on my new medicine. Read me the directions and the warnings in short, simple sentences. Then tell me what I should double-check with my pharmacist."

Questions

Can ChatGPT read a photo of a letter?

Yes. ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot can all read the words in a photo and explain them. Free accounts may have a daily limit on photos.

Is it safe to take a photo of a medicine label for AI?

A label is usually fine, but AI can misread small print. Always check dosage with your pharmacist, and crop out your name and prescription number if you like.

What if the AI gets a word wrong?

Tell it, like "The second line says 'twice a day', not 'twice a week'. Please redo it." Then check anything important with a person.

Is this free?

Yes. The free versions of these apps can read photos, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
