Use AI to understand a medical bill
AI can't tell you what you really owe, but it can turn a page of codes and terms into plain words and a short list of questions for the billing office.
Medical bills and insurance statements are hard to read on a good day, and harder when you're tired or worried. An AI chat is good at explaining what the words mean, what each line is probably for, and what to ask next. You stay in charge of the real numbers and the phone call.
First, remove your private details
Before you paste or type anything, leave out your name, address, date of birth, member ID, account numbers, and Social Security number. AI doesn't need them to explain a bill. Copy only the lines you have questions about, like "Office visit, level 4, $310, insurance paid $180, you owe $130."
Ask what each line means
Ask AI to explain the bill one line at a time in plain words: what the service was, what "allowed amount," "adjustment," "deductible," and "coinsurance" mean, and why your share is what it is.
Example: "Here are the lines from a medical bill. Explain each one in plain words, like you're talking to someone who has never read one before. Then tell me which lines I should ask about."
Compare the bill with your insurance statement
If you also got an "Explanation of Benefits" (EOB) from your insurance, give AI the same lines from both. Ask it to point out anything that doesn't match, like a different amount owed or a service that shows on one but not the other. A mismatch is a good reason to call.
Get your questions ready before you call
Ask AI for a short list of polite questions for the billing office or your insurance, such as asking for an itemized bill, asking whether a charge was sent to insurance, or asking about a payment plan. Write down who you spoke with and the date.
Things to know
- AI can be wrong about codes, prices, and what your plan covers. Your insurance company and the billing office have the final word.
- Never pay a bill because of a text, email, or call you weren't expecting. Look up the number on your own card or statement. See our guide to checking a scam message.
- If you're choosing a new plan this fall, see our open enrollment guide.

Questions
Is it safe to put my medical bill into AI?
Only paste the lines you need help with, and leave out your name, member ID, account numbers, and anything else that identifies you. AI doesn't need them to explain the charges.
Can AI tell me if a bill is wrong?
It can point out lines that look odd or don't match your insurance statement. Only the billing office or your insurance can confirm a mistake, so use AI's notes to ask them.
What is an Explanation of Benefits?
It's a statement from your insurance that shows what was billed, what they paid, and what you may owe. It isn't a bill. AI can help you read it next to the real bill.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
