Use AI to write your holiday letter and card messages
You bring the memories, AI helps with the words. Give it a few highlights from your year and you'll have a warm first draft in a minute.
A stack of blank cards can feel like homework. The hard part isn't caring, it's finding fresh words for the twentieth card. An AI chat can turn your notes into a friendly letter, write short messages for different people, and help you say something kind when the year was hard.
The recipe for a good holiday letter
Tell it three things: the highlights of your year in a few words each, who will read it, and the tone you want. Ask it to keep it short and to sound like you, not like a greeting card.
Example: "Write a one-page holiday letter from our family. Highlights: we moved to a smaller house in March, our granddaughter started kindergarten, and we finally took the trip to the Grand Canyon. It's for friends and family who know us well. Warm and a little funny, no bragging, under 250 words."
Short messages for many cards
List the people with a few words each ("old neighbors, moved to Florida; my hairdresser of 20 years; nephew in college") and ask for a two-line message for each one. Then copy them into your cards by hand. Handwriting is the part people treasure.
When the year was hard
If you lost someone or had a tough year, say so plainly and ask for a gentle message that is honest without being heavy. You can also ask for a short line to send to a friend who is grieving this season.
Make it sound like you
Read the draft out loud. If something doesn't sound like you, tell the AI: "Make it plainer," "Cut the jokes," or "Add that we miss Mom at the table." Two or three short replies usually get it just right.
Things to know
- Check names, dates, and spellings. AI can mix up details you gave it.
- Leave out private things like your address, phone numbers, or travel dates if the letter might be shared or posted.
- Want a picture to go with it? Ask for a simple idea for a homemade card, or a caption for your family photo.

Questions
Will people know I used AI?
Not if you give it your own details and make a few changes. The memories are yours; AI just helps with the wording.
Can it write messages in another language?
Yes. Ask it to write the message in Spanish, Italian, or any language, and ask a native speaker to look it over if it matters.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach is free to try.
What if the first draft is too fancy?
Reply "Make it simpler and more like how I talk." It gets better with each reply.
