Keep Thanksgiving table talk friendly, with help from AI
3 min readThanksgiving 🦃
A few good questions in your pocket can keep the whole table laughing instead of arguing.
Thanksgiving brings together people who don't see each other often, and they don't always agree. A little planning helps. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can suggest questions everyone can answer, games the kids will enjoy, and calm words to use if a topic gets heated. It takes about ten minutes.
Step 1: Get questions that fit your table
Tell AI who is coming. The more it knows, the better the questions.
Example: "I'm hosting Thanksgiving for 10 people: my parents in their 80s, my sister's family with kids ages 6 and 12, and two neighbors. Give me 12 easy, friendly questions everyone can answer, like favorite holiday food or a funny family memory. Nothing about politics or money."
Write your favorite three on a card and keep it by your plate.
Step 2: Plan a game or two for the kids (and grown-ups)
Example: "Give me 3 simple table games for Thanksgiving that work for ages 6 to 85, need no supplies except paper and a pen, and take 10 minutes or less."
Ask for a gratitude round too: "Give me a gentle way to start a round where everyone says one thing they're thankful for, so no one feels put on the spot."
Step 3: Have kind ways to change the subject
If a heated topic comes up, a calm sentence ready to go makes it easier.
Example: "Give me 5 short, kind things I can say to steer the table off a tense topic without embarrassing anyone. Then 5 easy topics to switch to."
You can also ask for help talking to one relative ahead of time: "Help me write a friendly text to my brother asking that we keep dinner a no-politics zone this year. Warm, not bossy."
Step 4: If someone is having a hard year
Holidays can be tough after a loss, a move or an illness. Ask AI for gentle questions that don't put anyone on the spot, and for what to say if someone gets quiet or upset.
Things to know
- AI won't know your family. Change any question that doesn't fit.
- Keep it light. A list of questions is a backup, not a script.
- AI chats are not private diaries. Don't share family details you wouldn't want stored.
- Free is fine. Any free AI chat app can do everything on this page.
