Pick a theme, choose your photos, and let AI help with the words: captions, a short dedication, and a plan so it's ordered in time.

A photo book or a family calendar is one of the most loved gifts there is, and one of the most put off. The hard part usually isn't the photos. It's deciding what goes where and what to write. That's where an AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Copilot can help.

Step 1: Pick a theme and a plan

Tell AI who it's for and what you have.

Example: "I want to make a 20-page photo book for my daughter's 40th birthday in December. I have about 200 photos from when she was little to now. Suggest 4 ways to organize it, and a simple plan to finish it in 3 weekends."

For a calendar, ask for one idea per month: "Suggest a theme for each month of a family calendar, like the summer at the lake for July."

Step 2: Write the captions

Short captions are what people read. Tell AI the who, where and when, and a little memory.

Example: "Write a one-line caption for a photo of Grandpa Joe teaching Sam to fish at Lake Geneva, summer 2019. Keep it warm and a little funny."

You can ask for a dedication for the first page too: "Write 3 short dedications for the front of a photo book for my sister, from me and Tom. Not too sentimental."

Step 3: Freshen up an old photo

Many AI apps can clean up a scanned photo: fix fading, scratches or a crease. Add the photo with the camera or plus (+) button and ask: "Fix the scratches and fading, but don't change anyone's face." Always keep the original. AI edits can change small details, so compare the two before you use the new one.

Things to know

• AI can't see your photo albums or your phone's photos unless you add them one at a time. You still pick the photos yourself.
• Before you upload family photos, think about who's in them, especially children. Each app has its own settings for what it keeps, so check them.
• The book or calendar itself is made on a photo printing website or at a store photo counter. Look up their holiday order deadlines early, often in the first half of December.
