Stay active indoors this winter, with help from AI
3 min readHealth
Gentle ideas to keep moving when it's too cold or icy to go out, planned around you.
When the sidewalks are icy and it's dark by five, it's easy to sit more than you'd like. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you plan small ways to keep moving at home and stay in touch with people. It isn't a doctor or a trainer, so check with your doctor before you start anything new.
Step 1: Questions for your doctor first
Example: "I'm 70, I have a bad knee, and I'd like to stay more active this winter. Write 5 short questions to ask my doctor about safe ways to move at home."
Take the list to your next visit or a phone appointment.
Step 2: Ideas that fit your home and your body
Tell AI what you have and what's hard for you.
Example: "I live in a small apartment with a sturdy chair. I can't get down on the floor. Suggest 6 gentle ways to move at home on cold days, like walking around the house or chair stretches. Keep each one short and simple."
Ask it to explain anything you don't understand. If something hurts, stop.
Step 3: A simple weekly plan
Example: "Make a gentle weekly plan for me: 10 to 15 minutes a day, a different easy activity each day, and one rest day. Put it in a table I can print."
Stick it on the fridge and tick off each day.
Step 4: Keep moving with other people
Moving is easier with company. Ask AI: "Help me write a short message inviting a friend to walk laps at the mall with me on Tuesday mornings." You can also ask it to help find indoor walking spots, senior center classes or library programs near you, then call to check times.
A weekly video call with family where everyone stretches for 5 minutes is a fun idea too.
Things to know
- AI doesn't know your health. Check new activities with your doctor, especially if you have heart, joint or balance problems.
- Stop and get help if you feel chest pain, dizziness or shortness of breath. Call 911 in an emergency.
- Clear rugs and clutter from the space you use so you don't trip.
