Use AI to plan a holiday party
AI won't wash the dishes, but it can turn a small holiday get-together into a few easy lists: who's coming, what to eat, what to buy, and when to start.
A few friends for cocoa, a neighborhood potluck, a family brunch, or a small office get-together. Even a little party has a lot of moving parts. An AI chat is good at the planning: keeping track of guests, food needs, and to-dos so you can enjoy your own party.
Start with the basics
Tell it the date, the time, how many people, your space, and your budget. Say what kind of party it is: sit-down, snacks and mingling, or potluck. Ask for a simple plan that fits.
Example: "I'm hosting a small holiday potluck for 12 neighbors on a Saturday afternoon in December. My living room is small, and I have one oven. Budget for my part is small. Give me a simple plan: what I should provide, what to ask guests to bring, and a timeline for the day."
A menu that works for everyone
Ask guests about food needs when you invite them, then tell AI the list, like vegetarian, gluten-free, diabetic, or a nut allergy. Ask for a menu where every guest has several things they can eat, and a short label idea for each dish so people know what's in it.
Who brings what
For a potluck, ask AI to make a sign-up list with slots for mains, sides, desserts, drinks, and paper goods, so you don't end up with six pies and no forks. If friends are chipping in money instead, it can split the costs fairly.
Shopping list and timeline
Ask for a shopping list grouped by store section, and a simple timeline: what to do a week before, the day before, and the day of. Ask it to put make-ahead dishes first so the party day is calmer.
Invitations
Tell AI the details and the tone, warm or funny, and ask for a short text version and a slightly longer email or card version. Ask it to include the date, time, place, what to bring, and an RSVP date. If you'll say a few words at the party, it can help with a short toast too.
Things to know
- Check every food label and ask guests directly about allergies. AI can't know what's in a store-bought dish.
- Don't put your full home address in the chat. Add it to the invitation yourself before you send it.
- AI doesn't know local prices. Use your own numbers for the budget, and double-check any math.

Questions
Can AI help if I've never hosted before?
Yes. Tell it that, and ask for the simplest possible plan with a short checklist. Small and relaxed is perfectly fine.
How do I handle lots of different diets?
List them all and ask for a menu where each guest has at least a few things they can eat. Labels on each dish help a lot.
Can it write the invitations for me?
It can write a draft. Read it, add your own touch and your address, and send it yourself by text, email, or card.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
