Return or exchange a holiday gift, with help from AI
3 min readHolidays ๐
A sweater two sizes too big, a gadget you'll never use, a second copy of the same book. Here's how to sort it out without a fuss.
It happens to everyone. The gift was kind, but it doesn't fit, doesn't work, or you already have one. Returning it can feel awkward or confusing, especially without a receipt or when it came from a website you've never used. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you understand the rules and plan what to say.
Step 1: Read the return policy in plain words
Store return policies are long and full of small print. Copy the policy from the store's website (or take a photo of the one on the receipt) and paste it in.
Example: "Here is a store's return policy. Explain it in plain words: how long I have, whether I need a receipt, whether I get money back or store credit, and anything that can't be returned. Keep it short. [paste the policy]"
Step 2: Make a short checklist before you go
A list saves a second trip.
Example: "I want to return a gift to a store. It's a [item], still in the box, and I have [a gift receipt / no receipt]. Make me a short checklist of what to bring and what to ask at the counter."
Step 3: Write a polite message for an online return
If the gift came from a website, you may need to write to them, or fill in a form with a reason.
Example: "Write a short, polite message to an online store. I received a [item] as a gift and would like to exchange it for a different size. I have the order number from the gift note. Keep it to 4 sentences."
Step 4: Decide what to do if you can't return it
Some gifts can't go back. AI can help you think it through.
Example: "I got a gift I can't return and won't use: [describe it]. Give me 5 kind ideas for what to do with it, like passing it on or donating it."
Tip: You don't have to tell the giver. If they ask, "I exchanged it for one that fits" is honest and kind.
Things to know
- AI can misread a policy. Before you go, check the store's own website or ask at the service desk.
- Never paste your card number, full address or account password into an AI chat. An order number is enough.
- Be careful with "return help" texts or emails you didn't ask for. Return season is a busy time for fake delivery and refund messages. Our guide to spotting a fake delivery text shows what to look for.
- Free is fine. Any free AI chat app can do everything on this page.

Questions
Can I return a gift without a receipt?
Often, yes, for store credit or an exchange, but it depends on the store. Paste the store's return policy into AI and ask it to explain the no-receipt part in plain words, then check with the store.
Can AI help me write a return or exchange request?
Yes. Tell it what the item is, what you'd like instead, and that it was a gift. Ask for a short, polite message, then read it and fix anything that isn't right.
Is it rude to return a gift?
No. Most people would rather you have something you'll use. You don't have to mention it, and if they ask, a simple, kind answer is fine.
