Follow the Thanksgiving football game, with help from AI
2 min readFamily
You don't need to become a fan. Ten minutes with AI and you'll know enough to cheer at the right moments.
In lots of families, the football game is on all Thanksgiving afternoon. If you've never really understood it, it's easy to feel left out while everyone else is shouting at the TV. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude is a patient teacher. You can ask the same question five times and it never sighs.
Step 1: Get the basics in plain words
Start with the big picture, not every rule.
Example: "I've never followed American football. Explain the basics in plain words, like you're talking to a smart friend who's new to it: how a team scores, what a 'down' is, and how long a game lasts. Keep it under 200 words."
Step 2: Learn the five words you'll hear most
A few words come up again and again during a game. Ask for just those.
Example: "What are the 5 football words I'll hear most during a game on TV, like 'first down' or 'field goal'? Give each one a one-sentence meaning and an example of when the announcer would say it."
Step 3: Ask about what you just saw
During the game, describe what happened and ask what it meant. You can type it on your phone between plays.
Example: "I'm watching a football game. The referee threw a yellow flag and everyone groaned. What does that mean, and why would people be upset?"
Step 4: Quiz yourself before the big day
A quick quiz helps it stick.
Example: "Quiz me with 5 easy questions about football basics, one at a time. Wait for my answer, then tell me if I'm right and explain in one sentence."
Tip: The same steps work for any sport your family loves, like basketball, baseball or soccer. Just swap the name.
Things to know
- AI can get small rule details wrong. If something sounds odd, ask a fan in the room. Most people love explaining their sport.
- Asking a family member "what just happened?" is a great way to join in, too. AI just helps you feel less lost.
- Free is fine. Any free AI chat app can do everything on this page.

Questions
Can AI explain football to a beginner?
Yes. Tell it you're new and ask for the basics in plain words and under 200 words. Then ask follow-up questions about anything that's still confusing.
What should I know before watching a football game?
How a team scores, what a "down" is, and what a yellow flag means. Ask AI to explain those three, and you can follow most of the game.
Does this work for other sports?
Yes. Use the same questions and swap in basketball, baseball, soccer or any sport your family watches.
