Mail holiday gifts on time, with help from AI
3 min readHolidays ๐
Gifts for family far away take planning. AI can turn it into one short list, so nothing arrives late.
If you send gifts to children, grandchildren or friends in other states, the hard part isn't picking the gift. It's getting it there on time, packed well, without three trips to the post office. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you make one simple plan.
Step 1: Make one list of who gets what
Example: "Help me make a holiday gift list. I'm sending gifts to my daughter in Ohio, my 2 grandkids in Texas and my brother in Florida. Make a table with name, city, gift idea, whether I'll mail it or order it online, and a 'done' column."
If you don't know what to get yet, ask it to write a short, friendly text asking each family for a wish list.
Step 2: Pick the latest safe day to send
Mail carriers post their holiday "send by" dates every year, and they change. Look them up on the carrier's own website (search for the carrier's name plus "holiday shipping deadlines"), then ask AI to plan around them.
Example: "Here are this year's holiday send-by dates from the post office website: [paste them]. I'm sending 3 boxes, to Ohio, Texas and Florida. Make me a plan with the day I should mail each one, and a reminder a week before."
AI doesn't know this year's dates on its own. Always paste the real dates in.
Step 3: Pack it so it arrives in one piece
Example: "I'm mailing a framed photo and a jar of homemade jam to my grandkids. Give me simple, step-by-step packing tips using things most homes have, and tell me what not to mail."
Ask it what size box to use, so you're not paying to ship air.
Step 4: One trip, one list
Example: "I need to mail 3 boxes, buy tape and pick up a prescription on Saturday. Put my errands in an order that saves driving, and make a checklist of what to bring to the post office."
Keep your receipts and tracking numbers in one note on your phone, or ask AI to make a simple table for them.
Things to know
- Watch out for fake delivery texts. Around the holidays, scammers send texts about a "missed package" with a link. Don't tap it. Our guide to spotting a fake delivery text shows how to check.
- Ordering online and shipping straight to family is often easier than mailing a box yourself. Ask AI to compare both for your list.
- Never paste your full card number, passwords or tracking-account logins into an AI chat. Names and cities are enough.
