Make a New Year plan you'll actually keep, with help from AI

2 min readLearning

Big resolutions fade by February. AI can help you shrink one wish into steps small enough to stick.

"Get healthier" or "learn something new" is a lovely wish, and a hard thing to start on a Monday morning. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude is good at breaking a big goal into small, specific steps. You choose what matters. AI helps you make it doable.

Step 1: Pick one thing

Example: "I'm 68 and retired. I'd like to walk more, read more, call old friends and learn to cook healthier. Help me choose ONE to start with in January. Ask me a few questions first."

Letting AI ask you questions first makes the plan fit your life, not someone else's.

Step 2: Make it small and specific

Example: "Turn 'walk more' into a plan for the first four weeks. Start very small. I have a bad knee and it's cold where I live, so include indoor options."

Ask: "Make week one so easy I can't say no."

Step 3: Make a simple tracker

Example: "Make a one-page checklist I can print and put on the fridge to tick off each day for January. Big boxes, large print."

Step 4: Plan for the slip-ups

Everyone misses a day. Decide now what you'll do.

Example: "If I miss three days in a row, what's a kind way to get back on track? Give me a short note I can read to myself."

Step 5: Check in each month

At the end of January, come back and tell AI how it went.

Example: "I walked 12 of 31 days in January. Mostly I skipped when it rained. Help me adjust the plan for February."
