Make the darker winter days easier, with help from AI
3 min readHealth
You don't need a big change. A few small plans for each week can make winter feel a lot lighter.
After the clocks fall back, it can be dark by late afternoon, and lots of people feel slower, flatter or more alone for a few months. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can't fix the weather, but it's very good at helping you make small, doable plans. It takes about ten minutes.
Step 1: Plan your daylight
Morning light and a little time outside can help many people feel more awake. Ask AI to fit it into your real week.
Example: "The sun comes up around 6:30am and sets around 4:45pm where I live. I'm usually home most days. Help me plan a simple week where I get some daylight every morning, like a short walk, sitting by a window with coffee, or an errand on foot. Keep it easy and give me a rainy day option too."
Step 2: Put something to look forward to on the calendar
Dark evenings feel longer when nothing is planned. AI can give you ideas that fit your budget and energy.
Example: "Give me 10 low-cost things to look forward to on winter evenings for someone who lives alone and doesn't like going out after dark. Mix things at home, like a soup night or a puzzle, with one daytime outing a week."
Pick two and write them on a real calendar.
Step 3: Stay in touch on purpose
Winter is when it's easiest to go days without talking to anyone. A small plan keeps people close.
Example: "Help me make a simple weekly plan to stay in touch with family and friends this winter: who to call on which day, one video call, and one short note or card. Here are the people: ... Keep it light so it doesn't feel like a chore."
If video calls are new to you, the Try-it box below walks you through one.
Step 4: Learn one small thing
Having a little project gives the long evenings a shape.
Example: "Suggest 5 small things I could learn this winter in 15 minutes a day, like a few words of a new language, a card game or a simple recipe. Make me a 2-week plan for the one I pick."
Things to know
- If you feel down most days for more than two weeks, or you lose interest in things you used to enjoy, talk to your doctor. Winter low mood is common and there's real help for it.
- If you ever feel like you might hurt yourself, call or text 988 in the US to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline any time, day or night.
- AI is a helper for planning, not a doctor or a replacement for people. Use it to make plans that get you out and talking with others.
- Free is fine. Any free AI chat app can do everything on this page.
