Set up a tech gift for a parent, with help from AI

3 min readHolidays ๐ŸŽ

The best tech gift is one that works on day one. AI helps you get it ready and explain it simply.

A tablet, a smart speaker or a digital photo frame can be a wonderful gift for a parent or grandparent. It can also end up in a drawer if the first hour is confusing. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you set it up ahead of time, turn the confusing parts into plain steps, and write a short how-to card that lives right next to the gift.

Step 1: Make a setup plan before you wrap it

Example:

I'm giving my dad, who is 81, an iPad for Christmas. He has Wi-Fi at home but isn't comfortable with technology. Make me a checklist of everything I should set up before I wrap it, so it's ready to use when he opens it. Keep it short.

Ask it what you'll need from your parent, like their Wi-Fi name and password, and get those before the big day.

Step 2: Keep it simple on purpose

Example:

My mom will mostly use this tablet for video calls with the grandkids, looking at photos and reading the news. Which settings make the text bigger and the screen simpler, and which apps should I remove or hide so she isn't overwhelmed?

Fewer icons on the screen means fewer "what did I press?" calls.

Step 3: Write a how-to card

Example:

Write a one-page how-to card in large, plain words for my grandmother's new smart speaker. Cover: playing her favorite radio station, setting a reminder for her pills, and calling me. One short line per step, no tech words.

Print it in big type and tuck it in the box. That card does a lot of the teaching for you.

Step 4: Fill a photo frame with the good stuff

Example:

I'm loading a digital photo frame for my parents. Help me plan about 50 photos from the last few years: a mix of family events, the grandkids, and a few old favorites. Give me a simple checklist so I don't forget anyone.

If you're scanning older prints, ask AI how to keep the scans sharp and well lit.

Step 5: When they call with a question

Example:

My dad says his tablet screen 'went sideways and the buttons disappeared.' What probably happened, and what should I tell him to try, in simple words, over the phone?

Have them describe what they see. AI can usually guess the setting they bumped.

Questions

Can AI help me set up a tablet for an older parent?

Yes. It can give you a setup checklist, suggest simpler settings, and write a large-print how-to card. Check each step against what you see on the screen.

What's the easiest way to teach a grandparent to use a new device?

Set it up before you give it, keep only the apps they need, and leave a short printed card with one line per step. AI can write that card for you.

Should I put passwords into the AI chat?

No. Keep passwords and account details out of the chat. Write them down for your parent instead.

Is this free?

Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
