Decorate for the holidays, with help from AI
3 min readHolidays ๐
Boxes in the garage, a tangle of lights, and a picture in your head of how it should look. Here's how to get there with less fuss.
Decorating is one of the nicest parts of the season, and one of the most tiring. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you picture the look, plan with what you already have, and break the job into easy pieces.
Step 1: Picture it before you lift a box
Take a photo of the room, mantel or front porch and add it to the chat.
Example: "Here's a photo of my living room. I want a cozy holiday look with a tree in the corner and a few touches on the shelf. Suggest 3 simple ideas that fit this room, and tell me where the tree would look best."
Step 2: Start with what you already own
Open your boxes and make a quick list, or take a photo of what's inside.
Example: "Here's what I have: [a 6-foot tree, red and gold ornaments, two strings of white lights, a wreath, some candles]. Plan a look for my living room and front door using mostly these. List anything small I might want to add, and keep it under [$30]."
Step 3: Plan a calm decorating day
Doing it all at once is how backs get sore and tempers get short.
Example: "Make a simple plan to put up holiday decorations over two afternoons. I'm [70] and doing it with [my grandson]. Put the heavy and high jobs first, while there's help, and add short breaks."
Step 4: Run a quick safety check
Example: "Give me a short safety checklist for holiday lights and a Christmas tree at home, in plain words. Include checking cords, turning lights off at night, keeping the tree away from heat, and using a step stool safely."
Tip: Follow the labels on your lights and the advice of your local fire department. AI gives general tips, not a safety inspection.
Things to know
- Ask for "simple" or "easy" ideas, or AI may suggest more than you want to do.
- A photo works better than a long description, and AI can't see sizes exactly, so measure before you buy anything.
- Never climb a ladder alone to hang lights. Ask a neighbor or family member, or keep the decorations within reach.
- Free is fine. Any free AI chat app can do everything on this page.

Questions
Can AI show me how my room would look decorated?
It can describe ideas that fit a photo of your room, and some apps can make a picture of the idea. Treat it as inspiration, not an exact plan.
Can AI help me decorate on a budget?
Yes. List what you already own and give it a spending limit. Ask it to use your things first and suggest only a few cheap additions.
Is it safe to follow AI's advice on holiday lights?
Use it as a reminder list, not the final word. Always follow the labels on your lights and tree stand, and your local fire department's advice.
