Plan a holiday meal around food allergies, with help from AI
3 min readHolidays ๐
One guest can't have nuts, another skips gluten. AI can help you plan a meal that works for everyone at the table.
Holiday meals bring more people to the table, and more needs with them: a grandchild with a nut allergy, a friend who eats gluten-free, a guest who doesn't eat dairy. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you plan a menu, look over your recipes and get ready, so you can relax and enjoy the meal too.
Step 1: Ask your guests first
The person with the allergy knows best.
Example: "Write a short, warm text to my son-in-law asking about his gluten allergy before Thanksgiving: what he can't eat, how careful I need to be about shared pans and crumbs, and whether he'd like to bring anything."
Their answer is the rule. AI's ideas come second.
Step 2: Plan a menu that works for everyone
Example: "I'm hosting Thanksgiving for 12. One guest has a tree nut allergy and one eats gluten-free. Plan a simple menu where most dishes are safe for everyone, so nobody gets a separate plate. Mark any dish that needs extra care."
Ask it to swap one ingredient at a time in your family favorites instead of changing the whole menu.
Step 3: Check each recipe
Paste in a recipe and ask: "Read this stuffing recipe and list every ingredient that might have gluten or nuts in it, including hidden ones like broth, sauces or seasoning mixes. Suggest a swap for each."
AI can miss things. Always read the label on every package yourself, every time, because recipes and products change.
Step 4: Keep the kitchen safe on the day
Example: "Give me a simple kitchen plan so my nut-free and gluten-free dishes stay safe: what to cook first, which pans and spoons to keep separate, and how to label the dishes on the table."
Ask it to make small labels for each dish, like "gluten-free" or "contains nuts", so guests know what's safe.
Things to know
- AI can be wrong about ingredients. The package label and your guest have the final word.
- For a serious allergy, ask the guest or their family how they handle it at other meals, and follow their lead.
- If someone has a reaction, call 911. Don't ask an AI chat for help in an emergency.

Questions
Can AI tell me if a recipe is safe for an allergy?
It can point out ingredients that often cause problems and suggest swaps, but it can miss things. Always check every label yourself and ask your guest.
Can AI plan a gluten-free Thanksgiving?
Yes. Tell it how many people are coming and what they can't eat, and it can suggest a menu and swaps for your family favorites. Check every package label.
What should I ask a guest with a food allergy?
Ask what they can't eat, how careful you need to be about shared pans and crumbs, and whether they'd like to bring a dish. AI can help you word the message kindly.
Is this free?
Yes. The free version of ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can do everything here, and our coach gives you 3 free prompts a day with no account needed.
