Plan a Diwali celebration, with help from AI
3 min readHolidays ๐
Diwali is the festival of lights. AI can help with the planning so you have more time for the people.
In 2026, Diwali is Sunday, Nov 8 (dates can vary a little by family and community). Whether you're hosting the whole family, cooking for a few friends, or joining in as a neighbor, there's a lot to plan: food, sweets, lights, and messages to people near and far. An AI chat app like ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude can help you make a plan that fits your home and your time.
Step 1: Plan the menu around your guests
Tell AI who's coming and what they eat.
Example: "I'm hosting 10 people for a Diwali dinner at home. Two are vegetarian, one can't eat nuts, and two are kids. Suggest a simple menu with a few family favorites and one or two dishes I can make the day before."
If you have a family recipe, paste it in and ask it to scale it for your number of guests.
Step 2: Make a cooking and shopping timeline
Example: "Turn this menu into a 3-day plan: what to shop for, what to cook ahead, and what to do on the day, hour by hour. Put sweets I can make ahead first."
Ask it to split the shopping list by store section so one trip covers it.
Step 3: Lights and simple decorations
Example: "Give me 6 easy, low-cost ideas to decorate my home for Diwali with lights, candles or diyas and flowers. Include safety tips for candles with kids around."
Keep candles and diyas at least 12 inches from anything that can burn, like curtains, and never leave them burning when no one is in the room. Battery candles are a safer choice around kids, pets and curtains.
Step 4: Warm greetings for everyone
Example: "Write 4 short, warm Diwali messages: one for my parents, one for a coworker, one for a neighbor who doesn't celebrate, and one for a friend far away. Keep each under 3 sentences."
Read each one and change a word or two so it sounds like you.

- Check every recipe yourself for allergies, especially nuts in sweets.
- Going to someone else's celebration? Ask AI for kind, simple ways to be a good guest, then ask your host what they'd like.
